This shows Lusanda, Jadi and Christy's submissions for the Red Eye event. It is an evening of Art, Music, Design and performance which is curated and sponsored by the Durban Art Gallery. It happens on a bi-monthly basis and is a great opportunity for aspiring designers and artists to showcase their work...

CAD rings

These are two of S'bhekile 's rings. He designs them using Rhino3D and then cuts the waxes on a Roland JWX 10 milling machine. These are then cast and assembled.

Christy is developing a range of rings which incorporate ribbons... and she is slightly dissatisfied with them, feeling they could be 'softer'... I would like to see some close-ups before I'll comment..

Fashion shoot 'in the city'

Lusanda is on this whole 'fashion mission' and it is producing very interesting work. In her own words...

"This turned out way more difficult then I thought. I was fun difficult though. I enjoyed running around and looking crazy at Warwick Junction(eMakete). I guess two highly made up girls with a camera following them around is unusual eMakete. So we got lots of curious looks and appeals to appear in "the magazine". I didn't want disappoint any one so I said yes.

I think we did well with trying capture the "new girl in the city" feeling I wanted. The is a juxtaposition between the clothing and jewellery and the surroundings the models are in. I wanted the feeling of the city in my context. Creating a contrast between the surrounds and the way they are dressed. I also feel like the character (Holy Golightly) says in the movie "nothing really bad can happen to you here". I really do feel eMakete is safe. It is crazy but safe.

In retrospect I would have organised the location better rather then just wing it. It could have given me more variation in the photos that were taken and save time, if I had decided on the specific places I wanted to go. Maybe find a way to do the wardrobe changes closer to the location because that takes up alot of time. I did have fun doing this and would do it again!

S'bhekile Lukhele

This is a design, done by S'bhekile, in Rhino 3D for a ring which refers to gears as the source of its design. This design is then cut, in wax, on a computer aided milling machine. The final piece is then produced using the lost wax casting process.

S'bhekile designs jewellery using Rhino 3D and then cuts it on a Computer Aided milling machine. He is particularly interested in designing jewellery that has an industrial and engineered look. This is a Rhino rendering of a ring he has cut and cast.

Christy's interchangeable jewellery

Christy is busy making a range of jewellery that can, and probably has to, be worn together in a sort-of-mix-and-match way. As she so eloquently puts it " The inter-changeable jewellery that I am working on at the moment only really becomes a piece of jewellery and comes to life when compiled and put together by the wearer to be worn. In this way I feel the wearer will be interacting with it and giving it a unique identity relating to their own."

Ambitious caster

Taryn Coleman is producing jewellery using lost wax casting. She rolls the wax wires and then constructs elaborate pieces of jewellery. Watch this space to see the bangle she has just produced.
